THE COACH HOUSE

Renovation of an 1830s coach house

Completed in 2018, this south east London coach house was converted into a family home.  From the main road the house, built in the mid 1830s, is tucked away and is often missed when you walk past it, but set over several interconnecting levels, all linking with a large open plan kitchen, dining & living area, the spaces have been opened up to create a light and airy home.  Crucially the interior of the whole scheme is a layering of the old and original coach house features together with the new elements, restoring as many original aspects as we could.  Plywood is the main new insert in the vertical planes and staircases, with a polished concrete floor replacing a rough cast cement floor, and uncovering amazing granite setts in the process.  Cork is used in the rest of the house for the bedrooms, bathrooms, utility and playroom.  We chose it because of its smooth yet warm surface, and seemed like the natural choice to marry the old textures of the house with the new smooth plywood additions.

Our whole project from start to finish on site was an immense team effort, as with every project it is all about the team, and this is no exception.  As always it was a joy to work with all the members of each company as listed below.
